Center Moriches wins Class B championship
BY BOB HERZOG

bob.herzog@newsday.com

February 27, 2009

With orange-shirted fans from Babylon screaming from the top rows of the bleachers on one side of the court and red-shirted fans from Center Moriches doing the same from the other side, it was clear the crowd had brought its "A" game to the "B" championship last night at Longwood.

They were pumped and so was Jonathan Ward-Adams. The junior from Center Moriches sank three-pointers on the Red Devils' first three possessions, added another trey later in the quarter and concluded his electrifying first-period fireworks display with a steal and coast-to-coast layup in the final half minute. By that time, only one side of the gym was making noise.

Ward-Adams scored 16 of his 27 points in that first quarter as No. 1 seed Center Moriches built a 29-10 advantage and withstood a 30-point fourth quarter by Babylon to win the Suffolk B title, 73-66. The Red Devils (15-5) will face Greenport on Monday in the Suffolk Small Schools semifinals. Their next game in the state tournament is March 10 for the Long Island B championship against Malverne.

"Just the atmosphere here got me ready," Ward-Adams said. "I was just taking my shots and they were going in. I get in this mode but I haven't seen it in a while. This feels great."

Ward-Adams has shouldered a bigger scoring load since earlier this month when his brother Jordan, a senior and the team's leading scorer, went down with a high ankle sprain. Jordan practiced for the first time in two weeks yesterday and entered the game with 3:20 left in the second quarter. He tested the ankle with his team well ahead and found out he could maneuver fairly well.

That was useful information for coach John Ward-Adams, father of the backcourt duo. In the third quarter, with Center Moriches' 22-point halftime lead whittled to 16, Dad sent his oldest son back in the game. This time, Jordan contributed. He nailed a three from the wing to make it 47-30 then took a pass from his brother for a breakaway layup that made it 53-35.

But Babylon would not go quietly. The third-seeded Panthers (12-9) scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 55-44. That's when Jordan Ward-Adams hit another three for some much-needed breathing room. When J.T. Pate, who scored 12 of his 24 in the final period, converted a three-point play, the Panthers were within 65-55 with three minutes left.

At that juncture, Jonathan Ward-Adams limped off the floor favoring his left leg. "I knew it was just a cramp. He was working hard at both ends and left it all on the court," John Ward-Adams said. "He was due for a big game. When you challenge Jonathan, you know he'll step up."

Jonathan returned to sink four straight free throws in the final half-minute but praised his brother's modest contributions. "We couldn't have done it tonight without him," he said. "Even though he wasn't as quick, he gave us a lift,"

That was after little brother provided the initial turbo boost.

Bates, Moorer leads Malverne to LI 'B' crown

BY KIMBERLEY A. MARTIN

kimberley.martin@newsday.com

March 11, 2009

With his right arm outstretched, Matt Bates demanded the ball down low.

Someone had to put Center Moriches away. And Malverne's big man figured it needed to be him.

He dribbled the ball between two defenders inside, drawing a foul as his layup went up and in. He missed the ensuing free throw, but he made up for it with a block against the Red Devils' Eddie Smith at the other end, setting the stage for a momentum-stealing three-pointer by teammate Kadeem Bell with 6:34 to left.

"I knew we needed a big-time stop because they were getting a little too close," said Bates, who had 19 points. "They just kept creeping up, so we had to stop them."

His 18 points in the second half, along with a game-high 20 from Deshawn Moorer were key for the Mules, who outlasted Center Moriches, 75-68, to win their third straight Long Island Class B title/Southeast Regional semifinal at SUNY-Old Westbury yesterday.

Malverne (11-10) will face the Section I-Section IX winner in a state semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Southeast Regional final at SUNY-Old Westbury.

Despite having a 10-point lead to start the third, the Mules showed signs of rust after a 17-day layoff. Their turnovers and rushed shots gave Center Moriches (15-7) plenty of chances to get back in the game, and the Red Devils cut the deficit to one with three minutes to play in the quarter. A minute later, they took a two-point lead on a pull-up jumper by Jordan Ward-Adams (26 points) and a free throw by younger brother Jonathan (26 points).

But the absence of 6-5 center Joe Gonzalez was glaring in the fourth, as Bates continued to force his way inside. The 6-4 senior snared one rebound after another, scoring a layup and putting back three missed shots.

Though Bates was an immovable force late in the game, it was Moorer (six threes) who was lighting things up for the Mules early. "I just felt like I was on fire," the 5-11 guard said. "Like I couldn't stop what I was doing."

Gonzalez's injury, coupled with Jordan Ward-Adams' ankle injury, made the task of upsetting the defending Class B champ all the more difficult, said Center Moriches coach John Ward-Adams.

"We tried our hardest," he said. "Jordan was just now playing at 90 percent. So without having Joe to match up, it was tough. It's been that type of a season all year long with facing adversity. I just give this team a lot of credit. The kids gave it their all, every second."

Said Moorer: "They're a good team. I can't lie. They came out with heart. We just had to come out with more."

Suffolk boys basketball preview: Class B

Center Moriches is the favorite in League VII, with point guard Jon Ward-Adams leading the way. Joe Gonzalez provides points inside. Explosive Wyandanch features Qualice Jones and Alexander Williams. Babylon is dangerous because of Jaquan Pate, brother of J.T. Pate, who graduated last year after passing the 2,000-point plateau.

Wyandanch tops C. Moriches, focuses on Stony Brook

February 24, 2010 by BOB HERZOG / bob.herzog@newsday.com

Wyandanch boy basketball team celebrates

It was a very satisfying victory, but several of Wyandanch's seniors weren't satisfied.

"One more to go for states," yelled point guard Jorell Pinckney as he ran off the court after the Warriors withstood the constant harassing pressure defense of Center Moriches to post a 66-50 victory last night for the Suffolk Class B championship.

"This was an accomplishment, but we want to get upstate. That's our second goal," said forward Saheam King, who had 19 points, nine rebounds and five blocks.

"Coach [Andre Edwards] told us when we were seventh-graders that if we worked hard and he coached us on varsity some day that he could take us upstate," said guard Qualice Jones who scored 13 points and contributed six assists.

To reach Glens Falls, the Warriors must defeat Nassau Class B champion Malverne at Bay Shore on March 9. Wyandanch (13-7) also continues in what Edwards called "the bragging rights tournament" when it faces Stony Brook on Sunday at Farmingdale State in the Suffolk B/C/D game. Center Moriches, the No. 1 seed in Class B and the League VII champs, finished 14-5.

"I told the kids if we played like we did when we beat them earlier in the season - rebound and share the ball - that we could win it," Edwards said, referring to the 73-58 victory over the Red Devils on Jan. 13.

King, in his third varsity season, helped with the glass control, preventing second-chance opportunities. "I felt like rebounding was a big factor," King said. "Plus defense and ball movement."

The latter was especially important because Ward-Adams led an aggressive, ball-hawking defense was disruptive at times. Forced turnovers did help Center Moriches cut a 15-point deficit to 45-38 with 1:37 left in the third. But Jones hit a pull-up jumper that hit the front rim, went straight up then dropped through, and King converted a tasty spin move in the lane to make it 49-38 after three.

The Red Devils made it a seven-point game one more time by scoring the first two baskets of the fourth quarter. But that's when Wyandanch put its foot down with a game-clinching 8-0 spurt.

First Pinckney executed a deft crossover for a sweet driving layup. King hit a floater in the lane, Pinckney found Mark Granville for an easy bank shot and King sank a baseline jumper. It was 57-42 with 3:03 left and Wyandanch found control amid the chaos of a fast-paced, sometimes sloppy game.

If there was a loose ball, a Warrior grabbed it. Same with a stray carom. "I was aware of their pressure, but I wasn't worried," King said. "I knew we could match their intensity."
