Weathers lifts Wyandanch over C. Moriches again
BY COREY MCLAUGHLIN

corey.mclaughlin@newsday.com

February 26, 2009

Kim Weathers had seen this defense before, and found it to her liking. This time she found it a little tougher.

In Wyandanch's previous meeting with Center Moriches, two weeks ago in the final game of the regular season, the junior guard scored a career-high 36 points.

Last night in the Suffolk Class B final, Weathers scored 21 points to lead the top-seeded Warriors to a hard-fought 54-42 win over No. 2 Center Moriches at neutral-site Longwood. It was the third win for Wyandanch against the Devils this year.

"I thought I would probably get double-teamed, but they also played real hard on defense as a team," the 5-5 Weathers said of Center Moriches. "They came to win. We came to win. Both teams played hard."

As a result, neither team ever really found offensive flow, and Wyandanch (18-2) didn't take a comfortable lead until the fourth quarter when Weathers put the Warriors up 50-37 on a floater with about three minutes remaining.

Center Moriches (15-4), led by Jessica Bandrowski (16 points), led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter. Wyandanch took a 29-23 halftime lead behind an impressive second quarter. Weathers had 10 during that period, mostly on her preferred fast-break layups after steals, to help the Warriors build a lead that they didn't relinquish.

The run was punctuated by a 2-on-1 fast-break executed nicely by Weathers and Aniya Webb (13 points). Weathers fed Webb with a behind-the-back pass and Webb returned the assist to Weathers who made an easy bucket to give the Warriors a 26-21 lead with 2:18 to go.

"The second quarter was huge for us," Wyandanch coach Warren Fuller said. "We tell the kids don't panic because, yeah, we were down in the beginning, but we usually are down in the beginning in these close games."

The third quarter was important, too, especially for junior guard Jessica Little. She scored all 10 of her points in the third, including the 1000th in her career, to help Wyandanch hold a 40-30 lead. Little now has 1,001 career points.

Wyandanch's next game is against Stony Brook in the Suffolk small school semifinals at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's College. Wyandanch also advances to the Class B Long Island championship, where it will play Malverne at 6 p.m. on March 10 at C.W. Post.

Wyandanch 11 18 11 14-54

Center Moriches 16 7 7 12-42

WY: Webb 13, Little 10, Wright 4, Weathers 21, Mike 1, McCullough 4, St. Hilaire 1. Totals: 21-8-54. CM: Bandrowski 16, Davis 14, Whittle 3, Glanzman 2, Plummer 2, Connolly 5. Totals: 14-7-42. Three-pointers: WY 4 (Webb 2, Little 2); CM 7 (Bandrowski 4, Davis 2, Whittle).

Davis' strong fourth leads Center Moriches girls

December 15, 2009 by ADAM RONIS / adam.ronis@newsday.com

(R) Mattituck #21 Stephenie Pisacano

Amber Davis was having a game to forget. The Center Moriches junior forward was scoreless for the first 23:25 of the game and picked up her fourth foul with 6:17 left in the third quarter.

Davis sat on the bench for the next four minutes, but when she returned, she made it a night to remember. Davis scored nine of her 11 points in the fourth quarter as host Center Moriches rallied to beat Mattituck, 41-37, last night in a Suffolk League VII girls basketball game.

"Usually, it's not good when I'm off," Davis said. "I usually get mad. It was difficult to struggle like that. I wasn't going to lose. I just had to step up."

Davis scored her first points of the game with 35 seconds left in the third quarter on a jumper to pull Center Moriches (4-1, 1-0) within 31-26.

In the fourth quarter, Davis scored on a drive to the basket and then hit a three-pointer with 5:33 left to give the Red Devils a 33-32 lead it never relinquished.

"Usually, we do a better job of finding her," Center Moriches coach Rich Alifano said. "She decided to become a presence late in the game. She demanded the ball and stepped up and showed the how good of a player she is."

Davis went 2-for-4 from the foul line to make it 35-32 and Kelsey Glanzman scored on a putback to extend the lead to 37-32 with 3:25 left. Stefanie Loverde scored on a runner and Theresa Zuhoski went 1-for-2 from the foul line to pull Mattituck (3-1, 0-1) within 37-35.

Then Jessica Bandrowski (13 points) forced a steal and fed Davis for a layup with 44 seconds left to make it 39-35.

"Defense is out main thing," Bandrowski said. "We didn't play our best offensively, but we played defense the whole game."

It proved to be crucial as Center Moriches outscored Mattituck 13-6 in the final quarter as the Tuckers had one field goal.

Both teams were plagued by foul trouble. Glanzman fouled out with 2:30 left, Zuhoski fouled out and Mattituck's leading scorer, Stephenie Pisacano fouled out with 1:25 left in the game. She picked up her fourth foul with 2:54 left in the first half and didn't return until there was seven minutes left in the game.

"That really hurt us," Mattituck coach Steve Van Dood said. "She's our leading scorer, but it gave the younger players a chance to play. They are probably the No. 1 Small School in Suffolk, so this isn't so bad."

Davis, Bandrowski lead Center Moriches girls to win

Quick Summary

No. 3 Center Moriches stopped No. 2 Wyandanch, 66-47, in the Suffolk Class B Semifinal.

Amber Davis scored her 1,000th career point with less than one minute left in the game Friday, but no announcement was made. The career achievement was secondary for the Center Moriches junior forward.

"It's OK," Davis said. "They'll announce it on Tuesday."

Davis is a big reason Center Moriches will keep playing. She scored 26 points to lead No. 3 Center Moriches over host No. 2 Wyandanch, 66-47, in a Suffolk Class B semifinal. Center Moriches (13-6) will play top-seeded Mattituck in the final at 4 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's (L.I.).

Center Moriches beat Wyandanch, 63-55, in overtime on Jan. 13 before losing to the Warriors last week, 62-55. This time Center Moriches made sure it wasn't as close.

"It's really big for us," Red Devils coach Rich Alifano said. "You know the tradition here. Look around the gym."

Wyandanch has won three of the last four Suffolk Class B championships and a total of 14 county titles.

Davis scored 17 points in a 36-26 first half. Kelsey Glanzman had 11 of her 13 points in the first half and Jessica Bandrowski carried the Red Devils home with 14 of her 20 points, including four three-pointers, in the second half.

"The difference was when we got in the huddle, Bandrowski was saying we ain't losing it," Alifano said. "We had a leader who stepped up and made it happen. She said put it on my shoulders and I'll make it happen."

She did. Wyandanch (13-6) went on a 13-1 run behind eight points from Kim Weathers (23 points) to cut it to 51-44 with 6:27 left. But Bandrowski hit a three-pointer with 5:03 left to push the lead to 54-44.

"I knew we had it after that," Davis said. "That brought the momentum back."

Glanzman followed with a layup, Emma Whittle hit a three-pointer and Bandrowski capped a 10-0 run with a driving layup for a 61-44 lead with 1:34 left.

Wyandanch, behind by 19 points in the third quarter, made two big runs, but the Red Devils answered each time. "They responded and it broke our backs," Wyandanch coach Warren Fuller said. "These teams are so evenly matched. I give them credit. They were the better team."

Center Moriches was flustered by the Warriors' 1-2-2 press last week, but handled it better. "We kept our composure," Bandrowski said. "We learned not to play at their speed. We broke their press and slowed it down and played our game."

The Red Devils knew if they wanted to reach the county championship game, they would have to beat Wyandanch at some point in the postseason. "We've been thinking about this since the season started," Davis said. "It feels good."

Bandrowski leads Center Moriches to Suffolk 'B' title

February 23, 2010 by ADAM RONIS / adam.ronis@newsday.com

Jessica Bandrowski of Center Moriches

Jessica Bandrowski took the ball after the rebound of a missed free throw and dribbled toward the Mattituck end. The Center Moriches point guard kept dribbling across the whole floor and had the ball in her hands for 28 seconds as the shot clock was winding down in the final 20 seconds of the game.

"Too many dribbles to count," Bandrowski said. "I didn't know what to do with the ball. I was so nervous. I was hoping to keep it in my hands and it would work out fine."

It did. Before the shot clock struck zero, Tashea Plummer was fouled with 13.7 seconds left. She missed both free throws, but Takia Plummer grabbed the rebound and fed it to Bandrowski, who was fouled.

Bandrowski hit one of two from the free-throw line with 10 seconds left to cap the scoring for No. 3 Center Moriches in a 35-32 win over top-seeded Mattituck Tuesday in the Suffolk Class B championship at St. Joseph's College.

Bandrowski scored 15 points, and she needed to deliver in the final minute because teammate Amber Davis fouled out with 57 seconds left and Glanzman fouled out with 44 seconds left.

"There was a lot of pressure on me," Bandrowski said. "I had to do it. I wasn't going to lose this game. We could win without them, but it would have been better with them."

Neither team could do much on offense. Center Moriches (13-6) outscored Mattituck 14-11 in the second half.

"The defense on both sides was tenacious," Center Moriches coach Rich Alifano said. "There were good rotations and a lot of effort. We haven't shot that poorly in a long time, and you have to credit Mattituck for that."

Mattituck (14-4) had one field goal in the second half. The Tuckers were held without a field goal for 12:29 spanning the second and fourth quarters. Emily Ianno (10 points) hit a short jumper with 5:11 left to end the drought and pull Mattituck within 28-27. Davis then fed Glanzman for a layup and Davis hit a three-pointer with 3:17 left to give Center Moriches a 33-27 lead.

"That was a very big shot," Glanzman said. "I was going crazy when she hit it. It was a big turning point in the game."

Mattituck also struggled from the foul line, going 6-for-11 in the fourth quarter.

"It was tough to score a basket," Mattituck coach Steve Van Dood said. "We had shots go in and out and we missed foul shots. Sometimes it happens. It wasn't our night."

Center Moriches won its second county championship and first as a Class B school. The Red Devils will play Stony Brook for the Small Schools championship 6 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's College. They will play Locust Valley for the Long Island Class B championship on March 9.

"This was what we wanted before the season started," Davis said. "We were waiting for this."
