Center Moriches parents upset that school taxes nearly tripled expectations
(12/15/04) CENTER MORICHES - About 100 parents gathered at a Center Moriches School District Board meeting on Wednesday night to complain about their school taxes.
The parents had voted in favor of increasing their school budget by 13.7 percent. But recently, district officials notified the parents that their taxes would be increased 38.4 percent -- the highest school tax increase in the Town of Brookhaven. Besides the higher taxes, parents also questioned why they were not notified about the increase earlier.
School leaders blame the higher tax figures on the state, saying they did not receive enough funding. Many parents are skeptical and want better management of school funds and an audit of the school district. District officials say they welcome an audit, and they also urge parents to write to their local politicians to ask for additional state funding.
I used to think only the old people were angry about the increasing school taxes. CM has improved greatly and has complied with all the state mandates but we are maxed out financially. My family is at the point where we can not afford another paycheck going towards school taxes. I voted no the year we voted on 17% and got 38% because I knew it was a blank check.( they decieved us) . I voted no last year because I don't feel the BOE is being forthright with our budget. I don't feel these "interim" administration situations are best for our district. The politics by our school BOE have destroyed our relationship with our neighbors. It doesn't make sense that we can't combine some services to save money because of ego's! Another big increase and this area is going to become a ghost town! I've got kids in school and I'm probably going to vote NO to get the message across to stop the excessive spending (and hoarding fund balances) and make it about our childrens education first!
