Corey Stark, 17, of Mastic Beach, was participating in the first practice of the year for a rugby club at William Floyd High School when he suddenly collapsed yesterday and later died, officials said.
James Montalto, a spokesman for the William Floyd school district, said, "Today was the first practice. There was no contact. They were warming up. Doing some stretching, running, and all of a sudden he collapsed."
There were about 50 students and coaches on the field at the time, Montalto said. CPR was performed immediately by those there, and was continued when police and an ambulance arrived, he said. The cause of Stark's death is still under investigation, police said.
A post on the William Floyd District Web site says:
The William Floyd school community is saddened by the sudden loss of one of our students, Corey Stark, a high school senior who passed away this afternoon. Counselors will be made available at the high school for our students. Our thoughts and prayers are with Corey's family and friends during this difficult time."
