Multiple agencies are investigating a single-engine plane crash in which the pilot of a World War II-era plane died when his aircraft went down near Mastic Beach this afternoon, Coast Guard and Suffolk police officials said.
Coast Guard officials have said the pilot was the only person aboard the aircraft. Witnesses said the plane appeared to be doing aerial maneuvers when it went down.
The plane flew from Brookhaven Airport and crashed 300 yards offshore, approximately three-quarters of a mile from a park office near a campground, officials said. Emergency call came in at 1:25 p.m. Sunday, officials said.
"There is a debris field and an oil sheen reported in the location where the plane went down," said Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Robert Dash in an official statement.
