Music is the Heart of the Soul.  It is sad when a community elects to eliminate a music program over athletics  . Both of these programs open up opportunities for our children. Music is  an essential part of life.    I can't fathom why the BOE majority would not consider Mr. Neuschwenders reasonable proposal ! The music program should be a priority to the district. These kids won't have an opportunity to learn to play an instrument at WHB and they lose because of a choice? Can't they see how dire the EM Elementary school is?  A Merger could have restored everything back to 5 years ago.confuse

The priorities of the elected  EM BOE and Superintendent don't make any sense.
I don't blame them for getting off the Board  , they're pathetic.

let''s go to a vote  sports vs music

If music is important pay for private lesson.

We got in to this financial mess because of overspending the K-8 program, it had nothing to do with the high schools.

Mr. Nueschwender wants to raise taxes by adding more to the budget!!!!

Dear Mr. Anonymous "Senior",

Mr. NEUschwender didn't want to raise taxes by adding music, he wanted to cut the $45,000 for teacher professional development down to $30,000 (it had been $10,000 last year), and to cut technology from $80,000 to $60,000 (it had been $0 last year) to pay for it. It would help if you got your facts straight, but for the last three years, facts have been in short supply.

Mr. Neuschwender also wanted to LOWER your tax rate by applying more of this years $760,000 fund balance to the tax rate, but the Superintendent and BOE majority decided to keep more of YOUR money in the District's bank account, not yours.

If I said using your logic about music lessons, that if you wanted your children to go to Westhampton, you should move to Westhampton, that might sound petty. So I won't say it.

They say I am the arrogant one. Funny.

Good luck everyone. You're gonna need it.

Glenn Neuschwender

GOOD FOR YOU GLENN !   That last post by  "Senior"  was the true example of the "mentality" of the East Moriches community , led by the remaining Board of Ed - WHB mantra! Good luck to any student entering High School without a background in music.

I'll say it for you .   If you want your children to attend WHB -  Then move there!

You're right "Senior", but with that mentality we should do away with sports, the library, computers, etc..  Anything that the children can get elsewhere should be gotten there and not a part of the school system.

Private music lessons help build a strong foundation for the school's music program.  Ever wonder why a far greater percentage of children in the music/arts program are the higher level academic achievers?  Lots of studies show the correlation.

I suppose "senior" that you find the need for a full-time psychologist acceptable?  Shouldn't parents just take their children to their own doctor?

How about that 31% increase for the business official?  I suppose you have no opposition to that either?

It's funny that a message board is being used to discuss meetings that so few attend.  Maybe if people got off their rumps and attended the meetings, you can hear and see first hand the circus that BOE meetings have become.

Until you attend and voice your concerns, no action on any matter will happen.   You want music?  Come out and speak up.  Anything else really bother you?  Speak out!  Contrary to what many people think, the BOE is not going to act upon anything written here.

The deafening silence at BOE meetings only serves to confirm that there is no opposition to the plan.  Speak up, or stop complaining.

The EMBOE may not act on anything written here but they get the message....

Unfortunantly, according to the pro-merger committee members the BOE did not even listen to or act accordingly to their pro-merger concerns .bleh  Glenn and Tom were the only open minded , concerned BOE members and they should be admired and thanked for their service.  The majority did not act in  the best interest of the taxpayers .

IF these programs aren't restored soon , while there is money than they might never be..... and the children lose.

Last night the East Moriches Board of Education voted 4-1 in favor of  adopting a proposed spending budget that will increase tax rates in our community by an estimated 3.79%. I voted against this budget. This occurred after an hour of me trying to persuade 4 people (Gary, Tom and John had already accepted the idea and then changed their mind) of adding 4th grade band at an impact to the tax rate of  less than .2%! While some of them acknowledged how important band is, the $30-$50,000 cost was not as important as increasing teacher professional development from $10,000 to $45,000, or increasing technology spending from $0 to $80,000, or increasing the school psychologist from 3 days per week to 5, or a 30% raise for the business official, or an 18% raise for the treasurer.

I could write more about the behaviors and words of some last night, but for now I will keep them to myself.

I believe music is offered to all students in all grades. I spoke with my neighbor with one child in th middle school and she said there is band in grades 5-8.
Is this correct?
Advanced science program would be nice.

That is correct.  There is a band and chorus in grades 5-8, thus none of our students are forced to enter high school without a music background.  Obviously it would be nice to start in 4th Grade...perhaps next year's board will raise that issue during the budget cycle.

It is refresshing every now and then to read a post about what we have, as opposed to always pointing out what we don't have.

I was starting to think that I live in the worst School District in NY State.  If you read enough of these blog posts, you would think the BOE is Tammany Hall with each member making a living off of cheating the taxpayers and that they run for office to advance some personal agenda to ruin the school.  An outsider would assume we have no discipline in the schools, no programs, no extracurricular activities, no parental involvement and support, no volunteers all working to make it a great school, no hope for the future and that we pay the highest tax rate off any school district on Long Isalnd.   Perhaps the bloggers should spend more time taking in all the great thinsg this world has to offer and less time complaining.

My children, their friends and my neighbors children all seem to be enjoying a wonderful K-8 experience.   Perhaps we should focus more on the great achievements of the students, give credit to the outstanding teachers and staff and appreciate what we have for a change.

We could probably learn a few lessons from the children!

Please vote "YES" to the budget and remind all of your friends and neighbors to do so as well.

If you want house prices to remain stable or even rise, we need to vote "YES"!

Cheers!

It's a known fact that "higher taxes equals lesser home values"

That's why houses are not selling.

If we go on austerity, the impact is far worse.  People want to a financially sound district with a stable educational offering.  Our taxes are high, but not as bad as other districts across Long Island.   High taxes are bad, but you would you even consider moving into a district where you don't know what education your childrean are getting?

Please vote "YES"
