Having beaten Timothy Mazzei for Brookhaven town supervisor last March, local Democrats are looking to recruit leading environmental advocate Adrienne Esposito to run for Mazzei's town board seat, political sources say.
Sources say that "very serious" talks are underway with Esposito, who is executive director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment, a group with offices on Long Island, Connecticut and upstate. Democratic officials see Esposito, a Patchogue resident, as politically savvy, articulate and a strong community organizer, they said. Mazzei declined comment.
Asked about talks, Richard Schaffer and Marsha Laufer, Suffolk and Brookhaven Democratic chairs, said "no comment," but did not deny discussions. Esposito was in New Orleans for a conference Friday and did not return calls.
Democrats have already named high school social studies teacher Matthew Charvat, 37, from Blue Point as their candidate, but he could decline when nominating petitions are filed and Esposito could replace him.
However, Richard Amper, executive director of the Long Island Pine Barrens Society, doubted Esposito's interest in elected office. "If its true, I would shoot myself," he said, "We have plenty of politicians, but we don't that many effective environmental advocates."
