Congratulations to our Lady Devils !  LONG ISLAND CHAMPS!

Going to States makes for a wonderful HS memory !

DRYDEN, N.Y. - Few girls soccer teams can say they started a season 2-6 and advanced to the state tournament.

Center Moriches can, but the Red Devils' improbable run ended Friday with a 2-1 loss to Briarcliff (Section I) in a Class B state semifinal at Tompkins CC. The loss snapped Center Moriches' 11-game winning streak, which began Oct. 8.

"Did I have states on my mind? Not really," Red Devils coach Lea Brady answered when asked what her mind-set was after her team's rocky start. "I knew we had so much potential, so I was just trying to get the ball rolling and really progress."

Briarcliff (19-1-1) got the ball rolling in the 19th minute when Katie Weiner knocked home the first of her two goals to give her squad a 1-0 lead.

Briarcliff appeared to have a second goal a little more than six minutes later when Liana Cornacchio put home a penalty kick. But the goal was disallowed because Cornacchio's shot came on a rebound after the initial shot hit off the right post. Only rebounds off goalkeeper saves are permitted on penalty kicks.

Jessica Bandrowski had a Center Moriches near miss with 11:04 to play in the first half. She lined up a free kick on the semicircle extending from the goalie box and ripped a shot that banged of the left post. A rebound attempt sailed over the net.

"That woulda, coulda, shoulda definitely goes through your mind after the game," Brady said. "But the end result is the end result."

Weiner contributed to that end result when she headed in her second goal of the game with 26:50 to play. The score came five minutes after Danielle Christiano was given a yellow card for having a shouting match with a Center Moriches player. Play got slightly chippy during that 10-minute stretch of the second half.

Said Brady: "We're a short team. But we're scrappy and tenacious and we don't get intimidated by anyone."

The Red Devils' missed opportunity in the first half loomed even larger when Emma Whittle connected on a shot from about 25 yards 1:32 before the final whistle. The shot hit the crossbar and fell just over the goal line.

Said Brady: "That's soccer. Sometimes those chances go in for you, and sometimes they don't."
