Run emo? The developments have little impact on the em taxpayer and em school system because most of these developments are located in the esm sd. They do have a large impact on the quality of life for everyone in eastport manorville e. moriches and c. moriches.
TOO Many properties in Brookhaven have been taken off the tax rolls! Save our homes....NO MORE TAXES!!!!!!!
Too many deer !
The cost to educate a student is around $15,000 per year. A single family home is paying $7000 or more per year in school taxes. The average single family home has 2 or more school-age children. The single family home COSTS the school district $23,000 a year.
A one acre piece of land undeveloped pays around $1000 per year in school taxes and INCREASES REVENUE to the school district by $1000 or more per year.
Most open space purchases are zoned single family.
The 10 acre property zoned A-1 with plenty of deer will add $10,000 in revenue and REDUCE taxes in the district.
The same 10 acre piece of property with 10 new single family homes will INCREASE COSTS by $230,000 and INCREASE taxes in the district.

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG....spoken like either a shortsighted education administrator or a tree hugger. This is the common garbage spewed by people who want to preserve open space at any cost.
The "cost" to educate a student may average "$15,000 per year". But adding another 20 students doesn't increase costs by $300,000 per year. The building is already built. The teacher is already teaching. The bus is already making their runs. When you add another child or two across 13 grades, the impact is zero. Further, to say the average single family home has 2 or more school aged children is just idiotic. If that were the case, there would be 5,000 children attending CM from the 2500 housing units in CM. There would be 3200 children or more from the 1,600 housing units in East Moriches. You do realize not every home has 2 or more school aged children, right? You also realize that most homes are paying more than $7,000 in school taxes, and that new homes would pay even more? To say a single family home COSTS a district $23,000 means you have your head up your butt.

When property goes "open space", it comes off the tax rolls. It doesn't generate any revenue. If the East Moriches Property Owners had their way, open spaces would be paying no property taxes, and the entire burden of cost would lay on the homeowners in East Moriches. The people of this town need to see what a poison this organization is becoming in their extreme views.
"Most open space purchases are zoned single family."
So what??? And what does "most" mean anyway? Again, short on specifics.
"The 10 acre property zoned A-1 with plenty of deer will add $10,000 in revenue and REDUCE taxes in the district."
$10,000 isn't even true if it's preserved (it's $0), and you know what $10,000 gets you in the school district? Gas for the lawnmowers.
"The same 10 acre piece of property with 10 new single family homes will INCREASE COSTS by $230,000 and INCREASE taxes in the district."
See above....what a bunch of crap.
"Save Open Space!"
Yeah, go save open space EMPOA, in Montana! Just get the heck outta East Moriches!

100 new homes on 100 acres zoned single family. 200 new homes on 200 acres zoned single family. 300 new homes on 300 acres zoned single family.
You make the call?
Are you saying 100,200,300 single family homes cost the taxpayer less than the land being preserved as open space?
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
How many children will attend school? 100,200,700, more?
How many extra buses? teachers?support staff?
Does the child need special education?
East Moriches has only 8 grades. How many students will be attending Westhampton Beach HS @ $17,500 per student per year, Center Moriches HS $15000 per student per year.
I belong to the Moriches Bay Civic Association and wish more open space was purchased in Center Moriches. After our high school and middle school was built my taxes increased 38%.
I just got back from Queens,
I love Moriches. Fresh Air, Clean Water, Less traffic, Scenic Vistas and Open Space.
Mr. Amper emphasized the fact that “residential development increases taxes because the cost of new government services for schools, police protection, etc., exceeds the tax revenue the new houses produce. The increased cost must then be absorbed by all taxpayers ... Preserving land helps control taxes because deer don’t go to school.”
MaryAnn Johnston, president of the Affiliated Brookhaven Civic Organizations, said the Budget Review Office “must have missed the history lesson. If development helps to lower taxes, then explain why the most developed areas of Long Island have some of the highest property tax rates in the nation.

Open Space purchases involve land zoned residential (single family homes). Preserving land helps control taxes because deer don’t go to school.
Retirement communities that do not allow school age children, and remain age restricted can bring more revenue than expenses to the school disrict. The one on the bypass allows school age children because only one person in the apartment needs to be over age 55. There is a schoolbus stop just outside the front gate.
I agree commercial development like the storage facility and the industrial park on the bypass bring revenue and no expenses to the school district (no kids). The local civic groups supported both projects.
My parents live in a smallish 55+ community of single family homes, condos and townhouses. They have spent many many years serving on the HOA board in all capacities and are very adamant about enforcing the rules about who can/can't live there. What they realized very early on is that when you ignore the issue, and all ages living there becomes the norm, you can actually LOOSE the senior status. They have confronted people moving their kids in when they clearly are not caretakers, unmarried (or un-civil unioned) couples, investors who don't care who they rent to, real estate agents who routinely ask "has anyone ever challenged the over 55 rule?" because they want to sell the homes to their clients, people who seem to think their pool and rec center should be open to all seniors who live in the surrounding area (it's owned and maintained by the homeowners, it's not a public facility) a nearby care facility that wanted to buy up single family homes and use them as part of their business, and even city staff members who would like to turn some of the units into section 8 housing. It's an ongoing battle to maintain something that everyone seems to want (a neighborhood for seniors) as long as THEY don't have to follow the rules. It's thankless.
I have not seen two very active EMO parents. Where are Glenn and Teresa? Do they attend EMPOA meetings? After losing out on the BOE seat and the school merger they seem to have gone missing. I was reviewing his estimates on high school tuition and tax assessments, they were way off base. It appears now his website is gone too.
YOU DON"T GO TO School Board Meetings? And you have the nerve to make comment on 2 people that had all the taxpayers best interest? Why don't U run for the School Board and join the elite.
As a proud alumni of Center Moriches and not so proud member of the community of two faced east Moriches isn't great to see so many of our EMO kids getting recognized for their amazing athletic accomplishments at Center Moriches HS! Every time I read Newsday I see another EMO kid florishing at our "local" High School. Altman, Saguto, Nelson, McGarrity, Ballester, just to name a few.....just think how much more wonderful our "community" school district could have been if it wasn't for such short sighted, gullible Board of Education members and our hypocrite Superintendent of schools
